Install Tor Browser on Ubuntu 20.04 - Step by Step process to do it ?

How to install Tor Browser on Ubuntu 20.04 ?

Follow the steps given below to install the Tor browser on Ubuntu 20.04 system.


1. Add PPA project maintainer repository

To get the latest version of the Tor browser on our system, we will download the Tor from the project maintainer repository. 

Therefore, we need to add the PPA repository to Ubuntu 20.04.

i. Access and Launch the 'Terminal' application quickly by pressing the 'Ctrl+Alt+t' keys.

ii. Now, type the below-mentioned command on the terminal to add the PPA repository on the Ubuntu system:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:micahflee/ppa

iii. After implementing the above task, press 'Enter' to continue this process.

The PPA repository will add to your system.


2. Install the Tor browser

i. Once the PPA repository is added to your Ubuntu 20.04 system. It is necessary to update the packages repository by running the below-given command:

$ sudo apt update

ii. Now, execute the below-given command to download and start the installation of Tor Browser on your Ubuntu system:

$ sudo apt install torbrowser-launcher

This will get Tor installed on your system.


3. Launch Tor Browser

Now, you will install all the required dependencies. 

Here, launch the Tor Browser interface then, it will automatically download all necessary packages. 

i. First, access the 'Activities search bar' and enter 'Tor browser launcher' in the search bar. 

ii. As a result, you will see the icon of Tor browser. Click on it to launch Tor.

iii. So you can Click on the 'Install Tor Browser' button and Wait for a few minutes, installation and verification will finish in a while.

For first time use, it will download the Tor browser.

iv. Now, you need to configure Tor by clicking on the 'Connect' button.

Now, the connection will establish to the Tor network.

This will display the Tor browser interface on your desktop in the browser.


How to uninstall Tor browser from Ubuntu 20.04 ?

After using, if you have decided to remove the Tor from your Ubuntu system then, type the following command to uninstall the Tor browser:

$ sudo apt remove torbrowser-launcher

Tor browser should be removed from your system after executing the above command.

1. Locate your Tor Browser folder. On Linux, there is no default location, however the folder will be named "tor-browser_en-US" if you are running the English Tor Browser.

2. Delete the Tor Browser folder.

3. Empty your Trash.


To Update Tor Browser on Ubuntu ?

To help keep you secure, Tor Browser will automatically update itself when a new version is released.

Execute the following commands in your terminal:

$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt install torbrowser-launcher
